The lack of a user manual can be an issue at times but the excellent online Wiki makes up for it in that it is completely up to date and well worth
reading carefully.rnrnSince I got the HDX 3 weeks ago I have been "picking up the ropes" quite quickly. I installed the hard disk fairly
easily (mine was diskless) and got the drive formatted and the NMT applications installed with a click of the remote control and a USB memory stick
(and reading the wiki to find out how).rnrnThe quality of the video output and audio is fantastic. The support for High Definition videos and FLAC
lossless audio is brilliant. 1080p DTS h264 videos work flawlessly and even with very high bitrates (25-30Mbps).rnrnWith the 3rd party applications, I
have "installed" YAMJ which is a great way to browse your video collection showing DVD covers and summaries of the films including IMDB
ratings. The Music Jukbox 3rd party software helps alot too with browsing my CD collection and these 2 apps make the user interface much nicer though
can take quite a bit of setting up to begin with.rnrnI have been able to get the "Transmission" torrent client working and the usenet client
too so the HDX can automate downloading, PAR-checking and unraring all by itself.rnrnThe HDX is surpassing my expectations - of course the GUI could
be better and the photo slideshow doesn't rotate photos at the minute though I've read this is already sorted in a beta firmware so things are always
improving.rnrnThings it doesn't support:rnrnNative video recorded from Digital camerasrnCertain HD video recorded from camcordersrnrn...but you can
easily check the codec and recode the video if necessary.rnrnFor playing movies, it is very straightforward and easy to use (my little Sis was using
it while I was out) but for going further you need to read the forums and learn from others - thankfully the HDX has a great forum and the NMT forum
is very active.rn

HDX 1000, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly! rnrnThe Good:rn* units looks superb!rn* It plays virtually anything sofa0072rn* boots a lot quicker than a
HTPC.rn* a lot of ways to connect the unit for sound and videorn* no noise (if no harddisk is installed)rn* no cooling fans neededrn* uses less power
then HTPCrn* great community (http://www.networkmediatank.com)rnrnbut,rnrnhere's the BAD:rn- using Windows Home Server "Library media
sharing" it only shows AVI files.rn- using Windows Home Server "Library media sharing" .srt subtitles are not shown.rn- harddisk noise
(when HD installed) I have a WD Green 500G installed, which whines annoyinlyrn- you need to install a harddisk (cost me € 55,- extra) when you
want to use the NMT Apps. For now no support for instaling on USB HD or SD-cards.rn- no user manual, only for connecting and installing harddisk (you
need to find out the rest for yourself, took me litteraly hours and hours).rn- movie-library functionality needs installation of extra apps and files
and can not be updated from the HDX itselfrn- no playlist (jukebox) options for playing music files in the NMT apps. This also needs external software
(through HTML) and can not be automatically controlled from HDX.rn- I needed to install "Llink" from Lundman (thanks man!) to add a
http-streaming-server functionality to my network. This way I can stream from rar files for movie0073.rnrnThe Ugly:rn- slow interfacern- ugly
interface for a device with this functionality. I was used to XBMC for XBOX (http://www.xbmc.org).rnrnIn basic:rn- The unit is a damn fine Network
Media Tank player and with a little modification and extra software it will play just about everything.rn- but if you are looking for something like
XBMC or MediaPortal or Meedios. "dont 'buy a NMT!"save some more money and build your HTPC.rn

I've had mine for over month now and I LOVE it. Dropped in a 1TB drive and haven't looked back! My top 11 reasons:rnrn1. Plays nearly everything
(except for my DTS-wav CDs)rn2. Firmware updates have been pleasant surprises with numerous new features and fixesrn3. Got my usenet client working to
download, automatically fix, uncompress, and categorize my media, working around the clock while only consuming less than 13 watts of power!rn4.
Installed My Lil Movie Jukebox to display my movie collection, including movie and actor inforn5. Custom themes are great for breaking up the UI
monotonyrn6. Slot in my camera SD cards to view my photos and movies in HD gloryrn7. Unplug 3 cables (power, ethernet, HDMI) and carry to friend's
houses for HD movie nightsrn8. Quiet, no fan. Using a WD green drive which runs cooler, quieter, and energy efficient.rn9. Using my Harmony remote
with great results and responsiveness (except while downloading and during post-processing, then the UI gets a bit slow, but at least movies are still
watchable.)rn10. Community support! Custom apps, themes, mods, and support make this a fun hobby. There's always something you can do to make it
"your box".rn11. Great case design: slick, solid, and functional.rnrnI have a 6.5Mbps DSL line at home and using the HDX's usenet client, my
downloads are running just under 6Mbps with 3 SSL streams. It makes the UI a bit sluggish, but still usable for watching 720p movies. Watching 1080p
video while downloading is sometimes problematic when there's too much high bit rate movement in the video. Compared to my PC, which is able to take
advantage of the full 6.5Mbps, the HDX is a bit slower at downloading. While the HDX is a dog at unrarring (could take over an hour), I still love it
because it's automatic and I don't need to move the files.
